Wabanaki Youth Return from DC

Wabanaki Youth Return from DC
Youth Council members from all FIVE (5) tribal territories returned from attending the 2023 United National Indigenous Tribal Youth Conference in Washington D.C. from June 28th to July 5th! They have prepared for months by meeting regularly, making regalia, and fundraising to make this trip a reality.
The conference allowed our Youth
Council the time to experience the history on display in D.C. They also visited the Native American Museum, the Botanical Gardens, as well as the Holocaust Museum, and the Natural History Museum.
Our WPHW team also attended the advisor’s trainings to discuss how to support our young people, fundraising, and how to keep ourselves well.
The youth attended the UNITY Gala where the Penobscot Nation Youth Council was recognized for the 2022 Youth Council of the Year! The following night they attended UNITY’s culture night where communities across Indian country shared their culture through a dance, song, and stories.
They also visited the Capitol for a tour, where Joe and Damon sang the Mi’kmaq

honor song as the youth smudged in front of the Capitol. They then sang and did a round dance. The youth gave a sweetgrass braid to Mary Kim, the Director of Unity as an appreciation of her support and a thank you.
