Language & Cultural Teachings

  • The division develops programs that bring together elders, mentors and youth to practice and share cultural teachings and language.
  • By doing ceremony on a consistent basis the division increases language competence and cultural knowledge.
  • Music and drumming are an integral part of all cultural language activities. Teaching Wabanaki children’s songs increases early childhood understanding of their language increasing the likelihood of fluency.
  • By incorporating best practices in suicide prevention and healing from trauma into all language and cultural activities, the division promotes healing and general wellness in the communities.
  • By increasing opportunities to use the language in all gatherings and all forms of communication, the division normalizes language use and increases fluency.
