Project Venture is an outdoor experiential education program for Indigenous middle-school youth. WPHW currently hosts Project Venture in the Penobscot, Maliseet, and Passamaquoddy at Sipayik communities. The WPHW Project Venture team facilitates in-school sessions that build participants social and emotional learning. This learning transfers to after and out of school sessions where participants are introduced to outdoor recreation activities such as rock-climbing!
On December 29th, 2022, Project Venture hosted their first intertribal rock-climbing event where participants and Wabanaki community members had the opportunity to climb together inter-tribally at Volta Climbing Gym in Trenton, Maine. The event brought together intertribal Project Venture youth and community members for an exciting experience to rock-climb together!
We would like to thank Volta Climbing Gym for their generous support and co-hosting this event. Woli-woni to everyone who participated and was involved. We look forward to future Project Venture intertribal events!
If your middle-school youth is interested in joining Project Venture, please contact Nyle Sockbeson at nsockbeson@wabanakiphw.org or (207) 991-4165 for further information.
“Rock-climbing was a very fun activity to do over break and it was amazing to have time to connect with other Native youth.” – Eben Francis, Penobscot “It was fun and there were a lot of people there I really liked the game where you held the stick and pointed where people had to move their hands or feet. I met a lot of nice people.” – Eli, Sipayik “I would like to come there again because it’s very fun and I would like to have the same people that came because you guys are so fun because we could play games there and stuff.” – Elliot, Sipayik
